The brass clasp is inset flush into the front edge — no handle, no carry hardware, nothing interrupting the unbroken expanse of dark wood — just the one small rectangle of gold that signals where to open it. And when you do: a playing field in deep olive, its matte surface absorbing light rather than reflecting it, points cut in alternating dark army green and soft parchment white that creates a board of genuine drama without a single bright color in sight. The flat-disc checkers in ivory and near-black sit against it with the quiet authority of objects that know exactly where they belong. The brass hinges — visible at the spine — are the only other metal in the composition, and they are exactly enough.
